Things I Call God in Seven Scenes
cracks in the pavement
widening in the toothy grass grin
of slow rebellion
spit-shined skin of children
hair worried as weeds
and tended as gardens
snow burdened branches
outstretched to soft creatures
slouching toward home
the aging woman
skin like corduroy
and song like spun silk
the smooth eyes of lake stones
ripple-worn to fit the arches
of tender feet
the call of a common loon
summoning the spirits
back from the travail of living
the wept tears of midnight
perched on blades of grass
making diamonds of morning
